It is hard to believe that over 60 years ago, a Christmas movie was made in black and white that is still shown today. It was based on a book by Charles Dickens, a writer of the time that wrote of social concerns. A Christmas Carol, was no exception. Ebenezer Scrooge has emerged today as the quintessential miser. I hadn’t seen the movie in years, but found that it was going to be aired only one night by CTV, so I recorded it, and watched it last night. I didn’t think it would play well sometime in May!
Well, as movies go, if one recalls that it was released 62 years ago, it was a pretty good movie. It was all dark in black and white, and while it has been remade nobody has done the job with the Ebenezer Scrooge Character like Alastair Sim did it. It is grossly over acted by Sim, but that only adds to the effects in the movie.
It is a message movie to be sure on all the things that were wrong with the way peopled lived at the time, the poverty, and the attitude of the ruling class to those around them. In some ways it could apply to some of the greed one can find in business today.
Later years have seen Jim Carey do the movie, and even in 3D it didn’t help to portray the character. Others have filmed variations on it all with little impact. Sure it is a bit corny, it is black and white, it is over acted, hammed up in fact kind of like a stage play. But it is a great movie, and loads of fun. I must see if I can find a copy for my own.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: New Years Resolutions
I have no way of knowing how people really feel, but the vast majority of those I meet couldn’t be nicer. Every once in a while someone barks at me. My New Year’s resolution is not to bark back.
A young newlywed couple had been holed up in their hotel room for a couple of days or so. About the fifth day, the young man looked out the window and saw that the Regent Theater was presenting a stage show.
He turned to his new wife and asked her, “Would you like to see Oliver Twist”?
To which she replied “If you show me one more trick with that thing, I’m going home to my Mother!”
Have a Great Day, and be kind to each other.
